Free Dog Training Tips - Preparing For Dog Obedience Training

It's time to start training your pooch. Whether he's full grown or still a puppy, training is important for all dogs and all owners. If you are starting an obedience training regime, then there are great supplies that can help make training easier. The supplies you choose will depend on your needs. Below are a few basics that aid in any sort of dog training. Remember that training is a learning process, and what works for someone else may not work for you. Once you figure things out, then you can move on to more advanced training tools.

The best aid that is available to you during training is an obedience class! Many people shy away from classes, because they feel that they are a waste of money. If you a proficient trainer and can handle the training at home, then this may be true. But, if you are a beginner then you may need help. That isn't to say that you can't do it on your own, but you will appreciate the expertise of an experienced dog trainer! If you are looking for a class, then use all your resources. Often, animal shelters and similar animal organizations will hold weekend classes for dog owners. These classes are extremely affordable and can offer valuable basic training advice for new dog owners. If you have a little more to spend, then seek out a dog trainer in your area. Ask to attend a class before you commit, so you can see exactly what you will be paying for.

Now, as far as equipment goes, what you purchase will depend on what type of training you are providing. However, there are a few basic items that help with most types of training. The first item, which is especially important if you are bringing home a puppy, is the crate. Crates are extremely helpful in house-training. A crate can help set a pooch's schedule. Through use of a crate (and other tools) he will learn when it is time to potty, when it is time to eat, and when it is time to sleep. Crates can also help with behavioral problems, such as issues involving submissive behavior, jumping up on guests, and destructive chewing. So, pick out a fitting crate and make it soft and comfy for your pooch.

A collar is another item used in training that many people overlook. Perhaps the collar is overlooked since a dog normally wears one anyway. A dog must get used to the feel of a collar, especially when it's time to go on a leash. There are a variety of collars that can be used for training purposes. Choke collars, check collars, and no-bark collars are all specialized collars that require supervision. Unless your training requires the use of one of these collars, you should look for a basic nylon or leather collar.

When outside the home (and inside at times), the leash is a necessary training tool. Without a leash, you will probably not have much control over your untrained pooch. Most trainers recommend starting with a leash that is six feet long. Six feet gives your dog a little freedom while giving you adequate control. Many public areas require these leashes, so it is money well spent. As the training progresses, you may need to move onto a longer leash.

No matter what type of training regime you start, you can bet that your pet will be motivated by treats; treats can be the most powerful training tool! So, make sure you are stocked up on some healthy snacks. Since multiple treats are consumed during a training session, it's important that the treats are not too large or have too many calories. To make the treat toting easier, look for a carry bag. You can find a bag that wraps around your waist complete with a drawstring for easy access.

In order to control your pooch during a training session, there are a handful of basic tools that you need. Try not to rule out obedience classes; the instructors can provide insight and activities that you may not be able to come up with one your own. Items you can start with include a crate, a collar, a leash, and treats. These items come in handy outside of training, too. As the training progresses, you may need to modify or add to your equipment.
